Myths and Facts About Psychological Support: Debunking Common Misconceptions

In today’s world, where more and more people understand the importance of mental health, there are still many myths surrounding psychological support. Believing in these myths may lead individuals to avoid or delay seeking the help they need. Let’s explore some of these myths and uncover the truth.

Myth 1: Psychological support is only for people with serious problems.

Fact: Psychological support can be beneficial for everyone, regardless of the severity of their issues. Stress, anxiety, loss, and conflict are all parts of life, and a professional can help find ways to better manage these challenges.

Myth 2: Real problems should be solved independently, without help from others.

Fact: Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Talking to a psychologist or psychotherapist allows you to view the situation from a different perspective, receive support, and discover new ways to solve problems.

Myth 3: Psychological support is time-consuming and expensive.

Fact: Long-term therapy is not always necessary. Sometimes, even a few sessions can help you understand yourself better, find answers to important questions, and improve your quality of life. Moreover, many organizations, like NGO In Touch Ukraine Foundation, offer free services.

Myth 4: All psychologists are the same – you can go to anyone.

Fact: Psychologists specialize in different areas, so it’s important to find a professional who matches your needs. For example, some psychologists work with children, others with adults, and others focus on treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Myth 5: Psychological problems can be solved by simply talking to a friend.

Fact: Friends can provide great support, but they may not have the necessary knowledge and skills to offer professional help. Psychological support involves specialized methods and techniques that help you better understand your problems and find effective solutions.

Myth 6: Only people with problems seek psychological help.

Fact: Psychologists can assist not only in difficult life situations but also in personal development, career growth, or improving quality of life. They work on motivation, confidence, communication skills, and more, contributing to both personal and professional growth.

Debunking myths about psychological support is an important step toward improving the mental health of our community. Don’t be afraid to seek help and support. The psychological support spaces of In Touch Ukraine Foundation are always ready to provide qualified, confidential assistance.

Residents of the Slovechansk, Narodychi, and Olevsk communities can access psychological support spaces, where administrators will organize online consultations with psychologists based on the situation (psychotherapist, child psychologist, corporate psychologist, etc.). Free services from specialized professionals are available to all residents.

Remember: Mental health is just as important as physical health, and everyone deserves support and understanding.

The work of the psychological support spaces is carried out as part of the project “Psychological Support Spaces in Communities of the Zhytomyr Region” within the project “Innovations to Overcome the HIV Epidemic.” The project is implemented by NGO In Touch Ukraine Foundation with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The project executors are a consortium of three organizations: Pact, FHI 360, and AFEW-Ukraine (“AIDS Foundation East-West”).
