How to Recognize Depression? Who Diagnoses Depression? Recommendations from a Psychologist at a Psychological Support Space

We continue our series of articles on mental and psychological health, where psychologists from psychological support spaces (PSS) share their advice and recommendations. In this article, Tetiana Cherniaieva, a practicing psychologist and administrator of the PSS in the village of Lystvyn, talks about depression: how to recognize it, who diagnoses it, and where to seek help and support.

What is Depression?

Depression is a disorder that falls under the category of mood disorders. The most common symptoms include a worsening mood, fatigue, and loss of interest in things that previously brought pleasure. These symptoms persist for two weeks or longer. Depression is often accompanied by sleep disorders, changes in weight and appetite, and the appearance of thoughts of self-blame or despair.

How to Know If You Are Suffering from Depression?

Reliable diagnosis is always conducted by a specialist – a clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, or general practitioner. Using psychological tests and interviews, they determine the diagnosis and discuss appropriate treatment with the patient, especially in cases of severe depression. In cases of mild symptoms, a therapist can also provide assistance through counseling.

How to Treat Depression? How to Help Yourself?

If you or someone close to you experiences the above symptoms for more than two weeks, it is worth consulting a specialist. A doctor or psychotherapist can conduct a comprehensive assessment of your mental health and recommend appropriate treatment.

If you feel the early signs of depression and are looking for ways to relax, at least until you can see a specialist, I recommend trying the following methods:

  • Establish a Daily Routine and Sleep Schedule: Set a regular routine that positively influences your hormone levels, which is an important factor in cases of depression.
  • Confide in a Close Person: An intimate conversation can reduce feelings of loneliness. The interlocutor will not only support you but also help to regulate thoughts that seem unbearable in your solitude. If you cannot talk to a close person, contact an online therapist.
  • Try Pleasant Movements, Relaxation, or Massage: Just as the mind influences the body, the body influences the mind. Pleasant physical exercise or relaxation can help relieve mental tension. You can find many guided relaxations or exercises online and try aromatherapy as well.

Depression is a serious condition that requires attention and treatment. If you feel symptoms of depression or notice them in someone close to you, do not delay seeking professional help. Remember that your mental health is the key to a happy life. Do not stay alone with your problems – support is available, and it can help you get through this difficult period.
